Signs the Call Was a Scam

Australians lose hundreds of millions of dollars to phone scams every year. If the missed call matches any of these patterns, search the number before doing anything else:

  • ⚠️ It rang once and hung up (callback scam)
  • ⚠️ A voicemail demands urgent action on your "account"
  • ⚠️ The caller claimed to be the ATO, your bank or a courier
  • ⚠️ The number called repeatedly at odd hours

How do I find out who called me from an unknown number?

Who called me from a private or blocked number?

If the caller ID was completely hidden, no lookup service can identify it, since no number was transmitted. If they call back with a visible number, search it immediately. For persistent harassment from private numbers, your carrier can place a trace on your line.

Should I call back a missed call from an unknown number?

Search the number first. One-ring missed calls are a known callback scam: the scammer profits when you ring back a premium or international line. If the number has a poor spam rating or scam reports here, don’t call it back.

Why do scammers keep calling my number?

Once a number responds to calls, it gets marked as active and traded between scam operations. Avoid engaging, report the number here so others are warned, block it on your phone, and consider registering on the ACMA Do Not Call Register to cut legitimate telemarketing.
